COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Men and women who walked in the March on Washington, August 28th, 1963, talked about their historic experience Sunday afternoon.

They were a part of I Was There-- Remembering the March on Washington panel discussion at Bethel AME Church in Columbia.  Community leaders shared their experiences and insights on where the civil rights movement is today.

"I'm exceedingly pleased with the progress that we have made," said Bishop Frederick James. "But the March on Washington was not for everything that we are now applauding. The March on Washington was for those things that were required at the time. Today, we've had progress in another facet of our advancement aspirations."

Bishop James remarked on the various qualified African-Americans now in leadership positions across the city and nation.  But all the panelists agreed there is always more work to be done to achieve equality.
