Hootie and the Blowfish give back to the Lowcountry

CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

A star-studded back to school giveaway brought thousands to Burke high school Saturday. The annual Hootie and the Blowfish "Home-Grown Roundup" supplied kids with backpacks stuffed with goodies.

The event provided school supplies to nine elementary schools in the Charleston County School District.

Besides the basics like paper, pencils, crayons and backpacks, the Roundup considered the extras, like socks to keep the students warm, hand sanitizer and soap to keep them healthy, and haircuts to make sure students look their best for the first day of class.

Members of Hootie and the Blowfish didn't just sponsor the event, they handed out the goodies themselves.

"Were doing this because it's the right thing to do. I mean it's working," said the group's lead singer, Darius Rucker. "We have almost 3,000 kids who are going to come through here today and get stuff."

The band's base player, Dean Felber, said they saw an event like the Roundup in Texas, and knew they needed to bring it to the Lowcountry.

"Were blown away by the size of it," said Felber. "The more I see it, the more we feel like it's a really positive thing, and it's really important that we keep doing it."

The roundup lasted from noon until 4 p.m.
