Worth County aiming for home playoff game

SYLVESTER, GA (WALB) -

While the Worth County Rams have been no stranger to the state football playoffs in recent years, the city of Sylvester has.

The Rams have made four straight state playoff appearances, but each game has come on the road and ended in a first round defeat.

New head coach Jason Tone says his team's goal is to bring playoff football back to Sylvester.

"We expect to get to the playoffs. The community expects it, the players expect it," Tone says. "But we want to host a playoff game. We want to host a playoff game at Milt Miller Field and bring it home to the community."

The Rams will have their work cut out for them though, playing in a wide open Region 1-AAAA.

Tone knows his team must bring their A-game every week if they want to finish in the top two spots required to host a playoff game.

"Monroe and Westover are good every year. Cairo is the standard bearer. Crisp County was on a roll at the end of last year. Americus-Sumter started out hot last year," says Tone. "Every week you have to show up ready to play or else you go home with a loss."

Tone, who played under former Rams coach Milt Miller during Miller's tenure at Lowndes, is making major overhauls to Worth.

He is installing an option offense this season, and has moved former RB Jatavious Curry under center.

Tone raves about Curry and how quickly he has picked up the offense.

The new head coach says this has led Curry to become the unquestioned offensive leader, a role Curry feels he is growing into.

"I think I lead the team more now than at the beginning," the senior QB says. "At the beginning, I was kind of nervous to lead the team because I had never been in this spot."

"He knows what everybody's doing, puts everybody in the right spots, and checks to the right plays that we're trying to get to offensively," says Tone.

The Rams open their 2013 season Friday night when they travel to Swainsboro.
