Andy's Restaurant Scorecard: MAGGOTS!

(WMC-TV) - Maggots along the wall near the service entrance.

Rumba Room, 303 S. Main St., roused the rabble with one nasty maggot infestation.

"It was nasty," said Otho Sawyer, restaurant inspection supervisor for the Shelby County Department of Health. "Quite a few maggots."

Tuesday, Aug. 13, a viewer sent the Restaurant Scorecard smart-phone video of the infestation. The next day, Aug. 14, another video -- worse than the first.

Thursday, Aug. 15, the Scorecard shot its own video of the infestation behind Rumba Room. By then, they had been untreated for at least two days, possibly longer.

The Scorecard wrote Sawyer to request a department inspection. Sawyer said one of his inspectors visited the property hours after our visit Thursday, but Rumba Room was not open. The inspector posted a Notice of Violation.

Friday, Aug. 16, an inspector was allowed inside and outside the property after Rumba Room opened at 7 p.m. Sawyer said by that time, the maggots had been cleared, but his inspector determined the source of the infestation.

"Uncovered garbage, leakage from garbage, uncovered garbage cans, grease on the ground," he said. "Any kind of nutrients like that, flies like to lay their eggs."

"Yeah, it was pretty bad," admitted Rumba Room owner/partner Edgar Mendez. He's not accustomed to receiving poor health scores. Health records indicate Rumba Room carries an average health score of 93.

When we asked him what took so long for the maggots to be addressed, he answered, "What happened is we normally open on Monday night, and we're closed out from Monday. So we really don't come back here (between Monday and Thursday).

"We had our pest control company treat it, but obviously, they didn't do a very good job. So we came and brought a whole bunch of bleach and just cleaned it ourselves right here."

The Scorecard's own inspection confirmed the clean-up. The inspector who visited Rumba Room on Friday issued it an 86, then upgraded it to a 91 after the staff removed some spoiled food, according to the inspector's report.
