I-20 eastbound construction moving at a rapid pace, says DOT

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Despite complaints from drivers, the state's Transportation Department says work on widening nearly seven miles of Interstate 20 is moving at a rapid pace.

The road construction project spans the eastbound lanes from Interstate 77 to an area east of Spears Creek Church Road.

Overall, the project will eventually create a six-lane highway in one of the busier sections of I-20.

Construction actually began last October, but many drivers may have started to sit up and take notice about five weeks ago when DOT and the Texas company carrying out the work implemented a major change in the eastbound traffic flow.

The shift splits drivers into two separate 12-foot-wide lanes bordered by concrete barriers. DOT brought in a lot of extra signage to give motorists plenty of advance notice and it is something drivers need to pay attention to in order to stay safe in poor weather conditions.

"We think we've had accidents from motorists in the work zone who are speeding, motorists who are inattentive; definitely I think that's a cause: people who are looking around the activities and not paying attention to what's in front of them," said DOT spokesperson Bryan Jones.

The project is on schedule, and the contractor is expected to begin putting down new concrete on Tuesday. But there's still a long way to go on this eastbound phase, which will take three to four months total.

Then after a break, work begins on the westbound side with completion scheduled in mid-May of next year.
