Coroner identifies man killed in multi-vehicle crash on Devine Street

Authorities have identified the man who was killed in a multi-vehicle crash at a well-traveled intersection Wednesday night.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said Marcos Reyes, 25, of Columbia was operating a 1996 Ford Explorer at a high rate of speed at the intersection of Devine Street and Cross Hill Road when the collision occurred.

The intersection was closed for hours as police investigated the accident.

Authorities say the initial investigation shows Reyes, who was headed south on Cross Hill Road around 11 p.m., ran a red light and hit a car headed west on Devine Street, sending it into another car.

Columbia police say Reyes' SUV went airborne and slid across all lanes of traffic on Devine Street before hitting a utility pole and eventually coming to a rest on its top.

Reyes was pronounced dead at the scene. Two passengers in that vehicle and the driver of another car were taken to the hospital.

It is believed one of the passengers in the car that ran the red light was thrown from the vehicle and suffered serious injuries. There is no update on that person's condition at this time.

The accident is still under investigation by the Columbia Police Department's Traffic Unit.
