GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The coroner said someone killed the man who was found dead near the Swamp Rabbit Trail on Monday.

Greenville County Deputy Coroner Mike Ellis said the man, identified as 60-year-old Robin Banta, was shot in the chest and has ruled his death a homicide.

Ellis said Banta had lived at homeless camp for about a year and believe he died sometime in July. Banta's body was found on Monday about 100 yards from the trail where it crosses Highway 253.

Banta has a son serving in the military and an ex-wife who lives in Oconee County, but they had not heard from him for about 10 years, according to Ellis.

Greenville County deputies said Environmental Protection Agency agents working in a wooded area nearby discovered Banta's body.

Investigators ask anyone who may have information about Banta's death to call Crime Stoppers at 864-23-CRIME.
