CONWAY, SC (WMBF) – Horry County Fire and Rescue Chief Scott Thompson says fire crews from Conway and Horry County are working the scene of an early Monday morning house fire on New Road in Conway.

Tamara Willard with the Horry County Coroner's Office confirmed that 68-year-old Donald Loan, Sr. died as a result of the fire. He was transported to the Conway hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:57 a.m. It is likely that the cause of death was smoke inhalation but an autopsy will be performed to identify the exact cause.

Coroner Willard confirmed that Loan was a resident of the home.

Many details of the fire are still surfacing, but Chief Thompson says five people were in the house located at 1806 New Road in Conway at the time. The family identified themselves to WMBF news as: Siera Palmer, 19, Jessica Johnson, 19, Tim Johnson, 42, and Crystal Loan Johnson, 42.

Three of those people were taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation, Donald Loan was among them, and a neighbor who was trying to help the victims was also sent to the hospital.

Among the remaining three in the hospital, we know there are two women and one man, but not the identities or their state of health.

Investigators believe an electrical fire in the living room is the cause of the blaze. The home is a total loss.

A fund is being set up to provide assistance to the family at Carolina Trust Federal Credit Union.
