FORT MILL, SC (WBTV) -

The Fort Mill community is mourning the loss of an Elementary school teacher who some say was a wonderful person whose life was taken too soon.

31-year-old Rebecca New fell off a dock at hit some sort of metal on Here At Last Lane on Lake Wylie Sunday morning.

"Sad, just sad," said New's former student Michael Debbout.

That's the best way Debbout could describe his feelings when he heard the news of Rebecca New, his former art teacher, passing away after falling off a dock at Lake Wylie and being cut by sharp metal.

"She was a good art teacher to have here," said Debbout.

New worked as an art teacher at Gold Hill Elementary in Fort Mill for the past three years.

She also bartended at the Madison's on the Corner pub off and on for seven years.

We spoke with the manager at Madison's on the Corner where New worked since 2006. He told us that he's too emotional to get on camera and couldn't physically an interview, but told us off camera that New was a great person who didn't let the worries of life get to her.

"She was extremely energetic and impactful. She had a true passion for teaching children art," said Fort Mill Schools Public Information Officer Kelly McKinney.

What makes it even harder for the tightly knit school family is teachers are due to report to school on Wednesday.

Grief councilors will be there for staff and students as classes resume next Wednesday.

The investigation into New's death continues by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.

Parents are working with the Fort Mill School Foundation to setup a scholarship fund in New's name for students to continue a career in art.

New also started on a mosaic tile art project with Gold Hill students last year. School officials say that art will still be hung in the school in memory of New.

School officials say went on to say a funeral for New will be held in her hometown of Conway, South Carolina more than likely on Thursday.

A memorial service is also planned for friends and loved ones in Fort Mill. A date and location have not been determined.
