The petition had about 100 signatures Thursday at 11 a.m. As of 3 p.m. it has over 1,400 as it spreads around social media sites.
A number of people have recently claimed executives from the television network are scouting locations in downtown Charleston for the 29th season of The Real World, a show that throws a handful of 20-something-year-olds into a house to see how they interact with one another. Typically, chaos ensues.
Scott Watson, Executive Director of the Charleston Cultural Affairs Office, says he has heard a cast member of the Real World: Portland is rallying producers to shoot in Charleston, but has not heard anything concrete. Watson's office handles permits for shows that wish to film outside of private property in Charleston.
Although shows can come in and scout or cast without needing permission, Watson says they would need to apply for crowd control and police presence if they plan to shoot on public property.
Officials at the SC Film Commission say they have not been notified the Real World is coming to the Holy City. The film commission deals with networks who are applying for incentives to film in South Carolina.
The petition claims downtown Charleston is already a traffic nightmare with the filming of the new CBS series "Reckless". It goes on to say if The Real World comes to town, things will only get worse.
"The purpose of this petition is to stop MTV from filming their new TV show here in Charleston, S.C.," the petition states. "The city is too jam-packed as it is. It takes 15 minutes to go one mile in some areas of the peninsula as a result of how many people are here, and it is creating a huge inconvenience for those that call Charleston their home."
It then asks people to sign the petition so "hopefully we can show MTV that there simply is not enough room for them to film their reality show here."
The writer of the petition is also worried that the show may "ruin the multi-century old reputation behind Charleston."
