GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Gideon Hackett, 19, said a ride on the Swamp Rabbit Trail on August 1 could have easily been his last.

Hackett said he rides the trail often on his bike, because it's convenient to his home, work and downtown Greenville, where he spends time with friends. On this particular trip Hackett said a group of at least a dozen men attacked him as he exited the trail near Falls Park on Furman College Way.

Hackett said the attack began shortly after 10 p.m. when someone punched him in the eye and threw him off of his bike. Hackett said others joined in and began kicking him. One of the men also pointed a gun at Hackett and, according to the teen, tried shooting him but the gun misfired.

Hackett said the men taunted him throughout the attack and laughed as they walked away with his bike and other belongings. Hackett said he suffered a black eye and bruising on his ribs as a result of the attack.

Hackett said he decided to go public with his story to warn others about the potential dangers of riding on the trail that he said has poor lighting and a lack of surveillance cameras.

Greenville police told FOX Carolina that adding lighting and cameras on the nearly five miles of trail that run through the city would be impossible.

Officers did say patrols of the trail had been stepped up as a result of the attack on Hackett. Police are asking anyone with information on the attack to call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.

Hackett said despite the attack he plans on continuing to ride on the trail.
