CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Two men are in the Mecklenburg County Jail after police say they broke into a home while a mother and two children were inside.

It happened inside a home on Pine Harbor Road in southwest Charlotte last Thursday morning.

Niki Laney, the homeowner, recalls the harrowing ordeal began after a stranger rang her doorbell the first of three times at 10:30 a.m.

"I didn't answer it thinking it was satellite salesman," she said.

Home sick, she went back to her bedroom on the first floor to lay down. Moments later, the thieves kicked in her front door.

"I knew what was going on," she said. "So I jump up, grab my house phone and run into my washroom. "By the time I grabbed [the gun] like this, they were in my house."

Unloaded, Laney says she had no time to load any bullets.

"And all I had to do was just jump behind this door here and just stand here in the dark," she said.

All the while, her children ages 14 and 5, lay sleeping upstairs. Laney dialed 911 hoping the crooks would never hear or see her.

"If I would have jumped out, I'm afraid he would have shot me or something else could have happened and I didn't want my kids to see me dead," she recalled.

They never bothered her kids -- just ransacked her room and according to police, stole her iPhone, cash, and some jewelry.

Police caught up with the suspects,  Archie Flemming and Theodore Fuller, less than two hours later after they tracked them down through the victim's stolen phone.

While her sense of security is shattered, Laney says she is just glad to be alive.

"You don't what you'll do until that situation," she said. "But the best thing you can do is not panic. Because panic can get you killed."
