(WMC-TV) - It is what every pilot dreads: A plane full of people when all of a sudden an aircraft's engine fails and smoke fills the plane. The exact nightmare scenario happened to a Bartlett pilot, but what he did during the emergency earned him a national award.

Captain Micah Peery landed a plane with little visibility when the ExpressJet plane he was flying filled with thick smoke. The Airline Pilots Association awarded Peery the Superior Airmanship Award. What he was able to do with his co-pilot is the definition of quick thinking, team work and professionalism.

Twenty-two people were on the plane April 3, 2012 as the crew approached the Denver Airport.

At 1,800 feet above the runway, the pilots heard and felt a vibration. A problem with the right engine caused smoke to fill the cockpit and spill into the rest of the cabin.

At this point visibility was only 12 inches in the cabin. Wearing an Oxygen mask and smoke goggles, Captain Peery put his chin up to the controls in order to see the instrument displays. His co-pilot called out altitudes and speeds for Peery. The two could not even see each other.

Not only did the pilots safely land the plane, they ended up landing just to the right of the center line and 500 feet from the landing threshold.

Mechanics later determined the smoke was the result of a bearing failure in the right engine.
