MORENCI, MI (Toledo News Now) -

The Morenci Police Department needs your help finding a kidnapping suspect who escaped from a patrol car earlier this week.

Police are looking for Craig Canfield, 39. They have valid warrants for charges of kidnapping, resisting and obstructing a police officer, escape lawful custody, larceny, assault and battery.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred Sunday around 11:30 p.m. at in the 300 block of East Street North in Morenci. Police say Canfield refused to return an infant to its mother and resisted arrest from officers when approached. Eventually, the child was taken from the suspect and returned to its mother unharmed. Canfield was then arrested, handcuffed and placed in a patrol car.

The investigating officer returned to the residence for additional interviews and when he went back to his patrol car, Canfield was missing.

Police believe Canfield slipped through a small window of the cruiser into the front seat and escaped out the passenger door.

Canfield is described as a white male standing 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing 181 pounds. He has hazel eyes, but did not have a mustache at the time of the incident, like a previous mugshot suggests.

Anyone who has seen Canfield or knows of his whereabouts should call 911 immediately.
