Joint Base Charleston plans to remove trees due to flight safety issues

JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Air Force officials say trees are being removed from the Charleston County Aviation Authority and Joint Base Charleston because of flight safety issues.

According to a press release, the acres of trees being removed are in violation of the Air Force safety standards, because their height exceeds specified limits for safe flight operations.

Officials say the trees that are being cleared out are near the intersection of Dorchester Road and Michaux Parkway.

A press release states with the removal of the trees, airfield safety will increase because the potential for an aircraft to hit an obstruction will be "greatly decreased" after the trees are removed.

Officials say the tree removal is taking place 100 feet from the street.
