Columbia Police have identified the suspect who was wounded after he allegedly assaulted an officer during a fight on Woodridge Drive Thursday afternoon.

Police will charge 40-year-old Michael Haywood with assault on police while resisting arrest and assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.

A check of Haywood's arrest record shows a lengthy history of criminal acts with charges dating back to 1992.

According to police, the officer was responding to a group of people fighting in the area. When he attempted to break up the fight, police say Haywood hit the officer in the head several times with a metal object.

"We know that there were at least two other non-lethal attempts to subdue the subject by the officer, but those attempts were unsuccessful and that is when the officer used his duty weapon to subdue the subject," said CPD spokesperson Jennifer Timmons.

"The suspect was shot in the lower body," Timmons said. "We're not sure how many times, but medical staff tells CPD his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening."

Both the officer and the suspect were transported to a local hospital. The officer was eventually treated and released, while Haywood remains in the hospital

As per normal protocol, the State Law Enforcement Division will aid in the investigation.
