A 31-year-old man is undergoing a mental evaluation after Lexington County Sheriff James Metts said he made threats against the Sheriff's Department and his wife.

Ronnie Michael Starling will be charged with one count of unlawfully using a telephone and may face additional charges.

Metts says Starling called the front desk of the Sheriff's Department headquarters around 4:45 p.m. and told the operator he wished to speak with his wife, whom he believed was there at the time.

Metts said Starling then became hostile toward the operator and threatened to harm his wife.

Following a series of phone calls between Starling and the Sheriff's Department, trained negotiators eventually persuaded Starling to give up his location.

Starling was taken into custody without incident an hour later at the 2000 block of Glenn Road and transported to Lexington Medical Center. He was not armed with any sort of weapon.
