MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A Maumee cardiologist charged with 30 counts of processing illegal prescriptions took a plea deal Tuesday.

Barry Deran pleaded guilty to four counts of felony drug trafficking and four counts of attempted trafficking in Lucas County court, where he could be sentenced later this year.

Based on these charges, Deran could face up to 10 years in prison. He also faces federal gun charges that could add five more years to his term.

The Ohio State Medical Board already suspended Deran's license in May. A board spokeswoman says a review of Tuesday's court action could lead to revoking the license.

After searching Deran's home and office in February 2012, agents seized numerous prescription drugs, firearms and medical records.

In November 2012, Deran was charged with prescription drug trafficking. In January 2013, the U.S. Attorney's Office charged him with three additional federal counts for conspiracy, making false statements to obtain guns, and unlawfully dealing in firearms.
