Man dies after shooting himself during police pursuit

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

A man authorities say shot himself in the head after leading Columbia Police officers on a chase late Sunday night has died.

22-year-old Donald Ross Rikard of Columbia passed away around 4:30 a.m. at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said.

Rikard shot himself in the head hours earlier while running from police near Garners Ferry Road.

A Columbia Police Department spokesperson said Rikard was involved in an armed robbery around 11 p.m. Jennifer Timmons said officers attempted to pull over a car matching the description of the robbery suspect's but the vehicle sped off.

Police said Rikard then hit another car near Pelham Drive before taking off on foot with a gun near the Hampton Court Apartments.

An officer who chased after Rikard told him to drop the weapon several times. Rikard, instead, placed the weapon to his head and fired, Timmons said.

Timmons said there is no indication the officer chasing Rikard shot his weapon.

As part of protocol, SLED has been called in to investigate.
