CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -
Because of all that rain we've had the in past couple of weeks, mosquitoes are everywhere! If you feel as if every mosquito in a 50-mile radius has you locked in its sights, while your friends are rarely bitten, you're not paranoid, you're probably a mosquito magnet.
We're seeing an increase of mosquitoes because of all that rain we've had.
"We set up traps we look for increases in population of mosquito and when those mosquito numbers increase we know it's time to do some fogging", Environmental health administrator Connie Mendel said.
The last thing you want to do is attract them.
"I've tried everything," Jed Turner said."Someone told me red wine keeps them away."
Red wine actually does not help.
"I have seen some studies that alcohol can have an effect because that affects your body chemistry," Mendel said."So, you may sweat a little bit differently."
Another thing that may have you scratching is exercise because mosquitoes love it when you workout.
"So, it can be sweat or if you are a warm natured person," Mendel said.
Pregnant women are also a mosquito magnet because they have higher body heat and exhale 21% more carbon dioxide.
So what can you do to protect yourself? Always wear insect repellents with at least a 40% deet. If you are out in the morning or evening, keep the repellant handy because that's when mosquitoes are most active.
