100+ foot section of highway missing after washout, mudslide

AVERY COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

A massive washout and mudslide in Avery County continues to grow as the rain continues to fall.

A 100-foot section of Highway 194 near Newland gave way on Monday night, sending a wall of mud 50-feet high and a 100-feet wide down the hillside.

Two homes were destroyed, but everyone got out safely.

The issue now is the washout is  getting bigger.

All three lanes now are cut with the problem 30-feet wider than it was Monday night.

Highway crews are having trouble assessing what they need to do to fix it, because daily rain keeps washing more of the road away.

"It is absorbing more water, causing more of it to fall," an official told WBTV. "That'll keep going until the rain stops for a few days."

The Department of Transportation says it cannot give a time estimate on how long repairs might take but one official, when asked if it could be at least a couple of months, told us "That would be optimistic."
