A man arrested by Richland County Sheriff's deputies after a pursuit early Sunday morning was reported missing in May.

Deputy Curtis Wilson said 49-year-old Benjamin Kearse is charged with DUI, possession of cocaine, possession of drugs with intent to distribute, driving under suspension and several traffic violations.

According to a missing person report filed with the Columbia Police Department by Kearse's wife, he had not been seen since May 28th. She filed the report on May 31st.

Wilson said just before 1 a.m. Sunday, deputies saw a car speed past them on Faraway Drive.  As deputies pursued the vehicle, they learned it was connected to the missing person case. The car was registered to Kearse's wife.

As Kearse attempted to turn onto Decker Boulevard, Wilson said he crashed the vehicle into a tree and ran off. Deputies caught Kearse in the 1700 block of Decker.

Kearse was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries and then taken to Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

According to the CPD report, Kearse's wife told investigators in the past, her husband had been missing for up to months at a time.
