Mitchell ready to become Dawgs' #1 receiver

ATHENS, GA (WALB) -

Expectations are high for former Valdosta Wildcat Malcolm Mitchell entering his junior season in Athens.

The Georgia Bulldog receiver was second on the team with 572 receiving yards and 10 TDs in 2012, a season where he split his time on offense and defense.

This season, Mitchell is expected to become QB Aaron Murray's number one target, following the graduation of WR Tavarres King and Marlon Brown.

That transition should be made easier by Mitchell only focusing on offense this season.

Though he won't be in the defensive playbook any time soon, he says being on that side of the ball has made him a better receiver.

"It gets you smarter, because you know the schemes and things. You know how stuff works on that side of the ball," Mitchell says. "Playing receiver, you do break downs of the defensive coverages and stuff like that, so actually going through the steps and the motions of learning it helps you prepare to go against it."

Mitchell is back to work after undergoing minor knee surgery just before the G-Day game. He is expected to fully participate in fall practices and be ready for the season opener.
