Gamecocks, Blowfish unite to raise money for Landon Powell after loss of daughter

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Gamecock alumni and current Blowfish players will take part in the 7th annual GameFish Cup Wednesday night at Capital City Stadium.

The game is even more special this year because a fundraiser will be held for former Gamecock catcher Landon Powell's family. He lost his infant daughter in January.

Izzy Powell lost her battle with a rare autoimmune disease at 4 1/2 months old.

A silent auction took place during the game to help raise money for the Powell's medical expenses incurred during Izzy's battle. The Blowfish have already donated $1,000 to the fund.

Some items up for auction included a helmet signed by Jackie Bradley, Jr. and Michael Roth, a 2011 signed Gamecocks team ball and even the chance to take an at-bat in the game.

The support from the fans and gamecocks nation, meant plenty to the Powell family.

"It just makes you grateful," said Landon. "I knew they were a great bunch of guys. I've always known that. To have them rally around me in this time, I just hope one day I can repay that favor and do the same thing for them."

"For me it's kind of overwhelming," said Landon's wife, Allyson. "Because we just went through so much this off-season and people have been wonderful and the community has really rallied around us."

"Gamecocks rally around Gamecocks when Gamecocks are in need," said Gamecocks head baseball coach Chad Holbrook. "Landon has been in need. He lost his precious daughter Izzy. We're here to support him and his family. Hopefully we can make some headway. Not only for the Powell family but also for the awareness of what Izzy had."
