(WMC-TV) - Parishioners from Light of Glory International Church gave Former NBA player and philanthropist Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway a standing ovation when they learned about his new undertaking.

The church is one of three Memphis churches chosen to participate in the pre-sale of his new Penny Card Sunday, which helps the uninsured and under-insured get health care discounts.

"Anything I can do to help in the city of Memphis," said Hardaway.

Memphis Tiger fans may recall when Hardaway donated $1 million to the program in 2008. This time around, he bought one million health care discount cards.

"I think it's a great program. Overall, it's helping people," he said.

The Penny Hardaway Foundation Distribution Manager, Roderick Harvey, said pharmacists accept the cards.

"This card will save people anywhere from 10 to 85 percent on their prescriptions," he said.

It also helps with medical needs.

"Discounts on your diabetic supplies, your imaging, your lab and things of that nature," said Harvey.

Access to health care remains a challenge for many in the Mid-South. Roughly 200,000 people in Shelby County qualify for the card.

Hardaway said this is personal.

"Medical is huge," he said. "After having six knee surgeries, I know what it would have taken for me if I didn't have insurance or if I didn't have the NBA to help pay for my surgeries, it would have been thousands of dollars."

The Penny Card can be used anywhere in the nation. It will be released to the public starting July 9.

Hardaway will also launch a mobile app at that time. Meanwhile, users can print out the card at home by going to www.pennygivesback.com.
