18 have hepatitis B after injections at N. Charleston clinic

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (AP/WCSC) - Fifteen more people have tested positive for hepatitis B after receiving injections at a North Charleston clinic.

Department of Health and Environmental Control spokesman Jim Beasley confirmed Thursday that 18 people have developed hepatitis after getting spinal injections on the same dates in February at the Tri-County Spinal Care Center.

Beasley says half of the positive tests have been identified as acute hepatitis B. The other nine cases are clearing naturally or already have cleared on their own.

DHEC began investigating the clinic earlier this year. The South Carolina State Board of Medical Examiners has suspended the license of an anesthesiologist working there.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says hepatitis B symptoms include fever, fatigue, nausea, joint pain and dark urine.
