CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

A former NFL player sentenced to 30 years in prison for the alleged rape of a college student in North Charleston in 2009 has filed for post-conviction relief.

David Meggett was found guilty of 1st degree criminal sexual conduct and 1st degree burglary in Charleston County in November 2010. The judge sentenced Meggett to 30 years in prison, minus time previously served.

He was also placed on the sex offender registry.

Meggett filed for post-conviction relief on Tuesday, according to the Attorney General's Office. Post-conviction relief is a general term related to appeals of criminal convictions, which can include asking for a new trial, modification of sentence, or a release.

The former NFL player's sentence came after a three day trial in which Meggett's attorney Beattie Butler told the jury his client admitted to having sex with the woman, but the two were friends and the sex was repayment for a debt.

According to assistant solicitor Chad Simpson, Meggett stole the human dignity of the victim, and used aggravated force by choking her and using physical violence. The alleged rape took place in January of 2009.

Meggett, a Super Bowl champion and three-time All-Pro selection, did not testify during his trial.
