COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Bond was denied Thursday morning for the brother of the suspect wanted in connection with the dragging death of a 52-year-old Earlewood man.

Columbia Police arrested 24-year-old German Orlando Zuniga-Torres and charged him with accessory after the fact in connection with the Sunday evening incident that killed Calvin Smith.

Police investigators say Smith was killed after he was hit and dragged underneath a van driven by German's brother, 29-year-old Dany Alexander Zuniga-Torres.

Investigator Matt McCoy told the judge German helped his brother hide the van at a trailer park on Old Percival Road and escape.

"During the incident, a brick was thrown at the van. The van took off down the street. It was dragging two individuals. One of the individuals, Calvin Smith, he died from his injuries," said McCoy. "He was dragged a little over 1600 feet."

Police investigators said the brothers been in the US illegally for at least two years.

Smith's family was also on hand at the hearing, asking the judge to deny bond because of the way Smith was killed.

"I also request that you deny bond on this individual because you don't treat a dog the way my brother was drug in the street like that and families are torn apart," said Smith's brother, James Smith.

"Like my brother said, a dog didn't deserve to be handled the way my brother was handled and I know this is not the trial, but they came to my mother's house and she had to see this thing happen to her son," said Smith's other brother, Tony Smith. "No mother should have to go through that."

Dany Alexander is expected to be charged with hit and run resulting in death. CPD investigators are worried he could be a flight risk.

The US Marshals have also got involved in the search.

If you have any information on the whereabouts of Dany Alexander Zuniga-Torres, you are asked to call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
