People arriving at the South Carolina State House Wednesday morning found pieces of a huge tree blocking the walkways.

The tree on the Sumter Street side of the grounds split sometime overnight Tuesday into Wednesday, not far from the Wade Hampton III monument and the Lt. Governor's wing of the State House.

As the branches came down, they pulled down parts of a nearby evergreen along with them. One branch knocked out a light.

Grounds crews removed the branches Wednesday morning.

WIS News 10's Jody Barr provided photos of the tree.
