Deputy shoots knife-wielding man during domestic dispute investigation

An Elloree man is recovering in the hospital after being shot by a Calhoun County Sheriff's deputy during a domestic dispute Friday morning.

According to Calhoun County Sheriff Thomas Summers, deputies responded to a residence at 535 Pickett Level Road in the early morning hours of June 14 for a reported domestic dispute between family members.

When deputies arrived, Lester Ray Rickenbacker, 31, exited the residence armed with knives in both hands verbally threatening the officers, Summers said.

Without warning, according to the sheriff, Rickenbacker attacked the deputies. He was shot at least one time in the abdomen.

Summers said the suspect's actions left his deputy no option but to fire his service weapon in self-defense.

"My deputy responded appropriately to the threat that the suspect presented him with", said Summers. "His quick thinking and reaction probably saved his life and kept the situation from becoming much worse."

Rickenbacker was air-lifted to an area hospital. His condition is unknown.

Summers said he will face a charge of attempted murder .

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting, which is standard protocol.
