Posted: Updated:

The South Carolina Highway Patrol says two people were killed early Friday morning when a tractor trailer ran off the side of the interstate and hit several trees.

According to troopers, the crash happened along Interstate 77 Southbound near mile marker 72 around 6 a.m. Friday morning. This is Bechtler Road in York County.

Troopers say the commercial tractor trailer ran off the right side of the interstate.

The truck went down an embankment and crashed into several trees. Both people inside the truck were killed, troopers say.

Troopers say the wreck shut down a portion of the interstate for several hours, reopening just before 10:30 a.m. Friday morning. At one point, traffic was backed up around four miles.
