ELGIN, SC (WIS) -

The Kershaw County Sheriff's Department says a teen with a developmental disorder that went missing Friday morning was found dead.

Sheriff Jim Matthews says the body of 15-year-old Daven Williams was found at the bottom of a nearby swimming pool that was a quarter of a mile from the school he walked away from on Chestnut Road.

Matthews says a homeowner located the teen's body in the pool around 11:30 a.m. and she immediately called sheriff's deputies.

When deputies arrived, they noted the teen had climbed over a chain-link fence and had fallen in the pool.

Matthews said one of his deputies actually searched that same pool around 6:30 a.m. and noted no one was in it at that time.

The sheriff's office received a burglary call around 5:30 a.m. from a home located near the school. The sheriff says they believe Williams may have been trying to get in the home, but was scared off.

On its website, the school is described as a "comprehensive residential facility and school serving children and adolescents with autism, developmental disabilities and pervasive developmental disorders."

In a statement released to WIS, school officials said "Part of our mission is to teach children to live in the least restrictive environment possible...For safety and according to license, homes cannot be locked for the safety of minors, and we do not have high fences to contain residents."

Officials said when Williams walked away door alarms alerted staff that a child was moving.

Williams was a nice, pleasant child who may be unaware of his environment, the school said.
