FBI investigating phone threat leading to Richmond International Airport evacuation

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

The FBI is leading the investigation into a phone threat that forced the evacuation of Richmond International Airport Tuesday morning.

Someone called the airport and made a threat around 6:10 a.m. Officials deemed the threat worthy of evacuating the terminal as a safety precaution. Officials wouldn't detail exactly what sort of threat was made.

"The threat was broad and included multiple sites at RIC," Troy Bell, airport spokesman told CNN.

The terminal and parking garages were swept by K-9 teams from State Police, Henrico Police and Richmond Police. Several other local, state and federal agencies are offering mutual aid assistance from numerous agencies.

All flights were held during the evacuation, with the exception of five flights that were permitted to land and held short of the terminals.

Passengers were allowed back into RIC after a nearly four-hour evacuation around 10:00 a.m., when officials finished sweeps and deemed the threat baseless.

Check with your airline provider to see the status of your flight. Passengers whose flights have been disrupted should contact their airline for rebooking options.

The FAA has also been notified.
