Union City, TN -
(WMC-TV) - A Union City pastor showed up in court Monday with the wife he is accused of trying to poison.
Eddie Mallonee and a woman described as a one-time girlfriend are accused of trying to poison Mallonee's wife, Cathy, while on a mission trip to Honduras.
Fliers posted all over the Obion County Courthouse that read "The blood of Jesus forgives sins" hint at the loyalty Second Baptist Church members have for their former pastor.
Eddie Mallonee and Shelley Moran, a woman whom investigators say was Pastor Eddie's one-time girlfriend, both pleaded not guilty to accusations that they planned to poison Mallonee's wife.
"One thing I would say is Mr. Mallonee, who has been married almost 34 years now, his wife and his entire family stand with him," said Mallonee's defense attorney, John Miles. "What I know is what everybody in this community knows, is that what he's meant to this community in building the biggest church in Obion County."
Mallonee stood next to his wife, her father, and other family members as his attorney spoke.
Eddie Mallonee was the pastor at Second Baptist Church in Union City for 15 years until he resigned in February amid rumors he was having an affair with church member Shelley Moran.
Just last week, a grand jury indicted Moran and Mallonee on charges of conspiracy to commit first degree murder and attempt to commit first degree murder.
Moran left the court house with her attorney.
Eddie Mallonee, surrounded by his family, made no comment as he left the courthouse holding his wife's hand.
At this time, details in the case are limited. The type of poison Mallonee is accused of using has not been released. His attorney says he does not know either.
Mallonee and Moran are scheduled to be back in court next month.
