Cereal drive to feed hungry kids enters final stretch

(WMC-TV) - Mid-South Food Bank officials say one in every four children in the Mid-South do not know where their next meal is coming from. Nurses at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital are teaming up with the Boy Scouts of America to help solve the problem.

It was almost impossible for Friday travelers along Poplar Avenue to miss the screams from the nurses standing on the street collecting food, specifically cereal, for hungry kids in the area.

"This is a competition across the United States with other children's hospitals to fill our food banks with cereal for kids," said Paula Dycus, Le Bonehur Children's Hospital.

The cereal drive was a week long project.

Boxes were filling up Friday from drivers passing by, but Le Bonheur staff and volunteers did not just rely on others to donate. They also took it upon themselves.

Several Memphis Boy Scouts also donated their summertime hours to collect and donate.

The groups' goal was to collect 350,000 servings, that is more than 20,000 boxes, of cereal.

"Kids don't get fed in the summer a lot. They depend on schools to feed them breakfast and lunch many times and so in the summer they're hungry," Dycus added.

Many Memphis companies, like Kellogg's, also donated to the week long cereal drive.

In fact, Kellogg's donated more than 330,000 servings of cereal alone.

In addition to cereal, the food bank is hoping to raise some money, too.

"We have the buying power for every one dollar that is donated, we are able to generate six servings of cereal," explained David Stephens, Mid-South Food Bank.
