Lexington man killed on rain-soaked Virginia interstate

HILLSVILLE, Va. (AP) - Virginia State Police say a South Carolina man has died after a series of crashes on a rain-soaked interstate in Carroll County.

Police say 57-year-old William Petty of Lexington, S.C., died Friday after crashes on Interstate 77 as Tropical Storm Andrea pounded the area with rain.

Petty was a passenger in a car traveling north on the interstate. The car hydroplaned while passing a tractor trailer, hit the guardrail and stopped in the middle of the northbound lanes facing south.

Petty and the driver made it out of the car safety. When Petty went back to the vehicle to retrieve some items, the car was struck by two tractor trailers.

The incident happened approximately 12 miles north of the Vigrinia-North Carolina border.

The driver, Susan Petty, received minor injuries. Neither truck driver was injured.

No charges have been filed.
