Couple charged after baby hospitalized for ingesting opium

A Gastonia couple has been charged with child neglect and abuse after an 8-month-old baby ingested opium and spent more than 20 days in the hospital.

Medical emergency personnel and police were called to a home on May Street in Gastonia at 6:15 a.m. on May 1 when the child was found unresponsive in bed and not breathing, according to a news release from the Gastonia Police Department.

The child was transported to Caromont Regional Medical Center for emergency medical treatment and then transferred to the Levine Children's Hospital.
Pamela Pope Cavender, 44, of Gastonia, and Nick Randall Huffstetler, 45, also of Gastonia, are each charged with child neglect/abuse resulting in serious bodily injury in the case.
