SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A large container ship got stuck Tuesday morning on the Savannah River.

According to a tugboat captain, the ship hit the bank on the South Carolina side of the Savannah River near Hutchinson Island in the downtown area.

According to the Coast Guard, the ship lost power and then steering, so they dropped anchor and became stuck along the side bank.

Several tugboats were called out to help get the ship moving again by pushing it back into the main shipping channel.

Crews were able to restore power and the tugboats will soon guide the ship back on course so it can continue on to its original destination at the Garden City terminal.
