SOUTH CONGAREE, SC (WIS) - After being placed on administrative leave by the town of South Congaree, Police Chief Jason Amodio has resigned.

Mayor Jerry McCormick says Amodio turned in his resignation letter, which is effective immediately.  McCormick says Amodio cited personal and family reasons for his decision to step down.

Amodio and Town Administrator Melisha Shumpert were placed on leave earlier this month after federal investigators seized town records. Sources told WIS the raid was part of a larger investigation into video gambling in the Midlands.

McCormick says the Town Council will meet to discuss the search for a new chief. Lt. Josh Shumpert has been appointed as acting chief.  He is not related to Melisha.
