Young Leawood bakers hope sale brings in big bucks for Oklahoma

LEAWOOD, KS (KCTV) -

Two schools were leveled and Moore, OK, was wiped out by a tornado.

The devastation has many pitching in to help the victims rebuild their lives, including some Leawood students.

They are proving that even the smallest hearts can and want to make a big difference.

A group of young girls are trying to make life sweet again for the people of disaster-stricken Moore.

"We're 10 and 11 years old, so it's hard to go out and physically help build houses and help clean up," Lila Tulp said.

So they are doing what they can by baking and pouring their little hearts into each batch.

The girls are preparing for a bake sale. The proceeds from the sweets will go to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund for Moore.

"It makes me feel really good, like I'm helping their community and I'm making a difference," Ella Higgins said.

Two years ago, the friends were doing the same but for Joplin, MO.

"There was a continual line of traffic, and some people didn't want the food, they just wanted to hand us the money," said Lila's mom, Lisa Tulp.

Their goodies raised more than $1,000, which a private company stepped in to match.

It was a no brainier to get back in the kitchen together to see what they could do for Moore.

"Small steps toward service are a great lesson for the kids to show that they can make a difference," Lisa Tulp said.

And every little bit helps to make "OK," OK again.

The girls are taking their first day of summer vacation Friday to hold the bake sale.

Anyone can support them from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Corinth Elementary on the corner of West 85th Street and Mission Road.
