Kilpatrick back in court in corruption case

DETROIT (AP) -

Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is returning to federal court, more than two months after his corruption conviction.

Judge Nancy Edmunds has scheduled a status conference for Thursday. It's possible that a sentencing date will be discussed.

Kilpatrick has been out of the public eye since marshals transported him to Milan federal prison following his conviction on a bushel of charges, from racketeering to fraud to tax crimes. He says he injured a knee during the ride away from court and now wears a brace while awaiting surgery.

Kilpatrick has asked the judge to override the jury's verdict and acquit him. He's also asking an appeals court to release him on bond while he awaits his sentence.
