Report: Bounty hunters behind bars for taking wanted man, son

ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Investigators say they have arrested two out-of-state bounty hunters after the duo took a wanted man and his 7-year-old son into custody at a home in Orangeburg County without notifying area law enforcement.

The Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office charged 35-year-old Corey W. Newkirk of Hendrum, Minn. and 35-year-old Shannon E. Samuel of North East, Md. with two counts of kidnapping. Samuel was also charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

According to Sheriff Leroy Ravenell, Newkirk and Samuel, received information that a wanted man, 47-year-old David Smith Sr. of Dover, Del., was at a location in Orangeburg County.

Authorities say the bounty hunters went to a Richardson Street home and took Smith, who has an outstanding warrant out of Maryland, into custody without informing local law enforcement officers.

An incident report states the bounty hunters also took Smith's 7-year-old son from the home.

Investigators then arrived at the location, verified Smith's outstanding warrant and took him into custody along with the bounty hunters.

The sheriff's office says the 7-year-old child's mother and Smith's estranged wife, 42-year-old Terri Ann Smith of Eutis, Fla., was also on scene during the investigation and was arrested after she gave a false name to deputies. She was charged with giving false information.

David Smith is being held for Florida law enforcement officials. The child was placed in emergency protective custody.
