CAYCE, SC (WIS) -

Beloved Brookland-Cayce High School coach and teacher Abbott L. "Abby" Bray, Jr. has lost his battle with cancer.

Seniors at school spent Thursday night decorating the campus in his honor writing his name on the sidewalk and in windows on the eve of the annual battle of the classes.

The field day was supposed to be a tribute to Bray, which he started at the high school decades ago, but instead students and teachers were met with the news that he passed away Thursday night after a short, but painful fight with pancreatic cancer.

Instead of canceling the event the school decided to use it to honor a man they say had an unwavering spirit full of love.

"He could love you wherever you came from, He did not draw lines on color, race or creed." said teacher Lynn Summer. "He met you wherever you were and could help you through whatever you had going on."

Bray, who taught at the school for decades, held the position of athletics director and head football coach from 2008-2011.

He was also a member of the West Columbia City Council, elected to the district four seat in November, 2011.

"The Mayor, City Council and city employees extend their sympathies and prayers to the family members and many friends of Council Member Bray," stated a news release from the City of West Columbia. "Even though he served a relatively short time on city council his presence will be greatly missed."

Visitation for Bray will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2013 in the auditorium at Brookland-Cayce High School located at 1300 State Street in Cayce.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 19, 2013 at Trinity Baptist Church located at 321 Charleston Highway.

Immediately following the service internment will be at Woodridge Memorial Park at 138 Corley Mill Road in Lexington near I-20 and Highway 378.

Bray graduated from Brookland-Cayce in 1975. He leaves a wife and children.
