PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A senior at Hamilton High School in Chandler is well on his way to attaining perfect attendance since kindergarten.

Darby Vance has never called in sick, played hooky or gone on vacation during the school year.

If Vance shows up for the rest of the school year, which is only seven more days, he will have achieved his goal of a perfect record in attendance.

In order to be counted as "present", not only do students have to show up for class, they need to be on time and stay until the end of the school day.

Vance has done this for 13 years.  CBS 5 news verified his record.

"He's attended school for 2,340 consecutive days," said Heather Patterson, the senior administrator at Hamilton High School.

Vance said he never really got sick enough to miss school. If he came down with something, it was over the weekend or during the holidays.

"I mean there's been days where I have not wanted to come to school, but I just get out of bed and I do it anyway," said Vance.

Vance's dad said he would tell his son that you can't learn if you're not in school. That mindset sunk in with Vance.

Vance's dad tells of a time his son took a big risk just to make sure he got to school on time.

"I think it was seventh or eighth grade that he actually thought he missed the bus, so he hitchhiked to junior high," said Dale Vance, Darby's father.

Vance plans to go to Arizona State University and major in software engineering and digital culture.
