BEAUFORT, SC (FOX Carolina) -

As she performed for the last time garnering for the nation's votes, the Palmetto State rallied around American Idol contestant Candice Glover Thursday night when she was announced the winner of Season 12.

The St. Helena Island native sang three songs in part one of the finale, competing against Texas' Kree Harrison for the title of American Idol.

Thursday night, Beaufort gathered for a watch party at the Highway 21 Drive-In to watch the final episode on a jumbo screen in the hopes Candice would win.

After it was announced she won, Candice broke down in tears saying, "Three years," which is how long it took her to make it to the top rounds on the show.

"First of all it's terrific for her - three times with it," Mayor Billy Keyserling said. "Got better and better. She's got a career no matter what; she has a great career."

The town is living through Glover's dreams of becoming a star and proudly supporting her success.

"America knows her name and know who Candice Glover is," said Beaufort High School teacher Valerie Jackson. "She will be a success."
