Authorities have identified the two people who were killed in a head-on crash on Interstate 26 Wednesday night.

The incident happened just before 9:30 p.m. in the westbound lanes near the weigh station at mile marker 93.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said Marcus G. Hicks, 50, of Irmo was alone and operating a 2004 GMC pick-up the wrong way in the westbound lanes when he struck 1989 Toyota pick-up head-on.

Nathan R. Yon, 39, of Newberry, was the operator of the Toyota pickup.

The drivers of both vehicles were killed. Investigators determined neither driver was wearing a seatbelt.

Yon was Executive Director and Chairman of the Board of the South Carolina Science Academy.

The academy was to open in the former Parisian building at the Richland Mall. Yon was featured in a story that aired on WIS earlier this month.
