WHITEVILLE, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A Mid-South community is on edge following three robberies in the past week. The most recent robbery happened Monday night at a BP gas station in Whiteville, Tennessee, and it was all caught on camera.

Police are hoping someone will recognize the masked man from the store's surveillance video. The suspect, who was dressed in black, walked in with a bandanna and a Spider-Man backpack. He pulled out a gun, fired a round of ammo, and took all of the cash from the cash register.

"You hear about this all the time in Memphis but never think it'll happen in a small town like this," said Whiteville resident Darian Crisp.

The armed robbery happened Monday around 10:45 p.m. at the BP on Highway 64.

Whiteville police say once the man took the cash, he hopped back over the counter, and took off in a field behind the gas station.

Police are not sure whether the masked suspect lives in the area.

"Folks normally are just hometown people," said Chief Steve Stanley, Whiteville Police Department. "Everybody minds their business and goes about their way."

Whiteville police say this robbery is the third of its kind in just one week.

Last week, someone did around $10,000 worth of damage to the Whiteville Food Mart.

Police are not sure if that suspect is the same one who robbed the BP store.

"I'm just thankful to God I didn't stop in here last night on my way home as this was going on," said Crisp. "I stopped here today to get gas. I stop here everyday before I go to work."

Whiteville police say they will be stopping every car that comes through town. They will also be saturating certain areas and following all leads.

They say they hope this suspect's Spider-Man backpack will be a key piece of evidence to solving the crime.

If you recognize the man in the surveillance video, call the Hardeman County Sheriff's Department at 1-731-658-3971. You can also email information to tips@townofwhiteville.com.

The City of Whiteville is offering a $2,500 reward for information on the robbery suspect.
