PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A Scottsdale mother who pleaded guilty to killing her 6-day-old baby was sentenced to four years supervised probation and a 12-month deferred jail term.

Judge Teresa Sanders handed down the sentence Monday in Maricopa County Superior Court.

Nina Koistinen, who was arrested April 25, 2013 in connection with Maya Hope Koistinen's death April 8, pleaded guilty Jan. 28 to one count of negligent homicide and agreed to be placed on supervised probation.

In a plea agreement, the court in January granted a motion by her attorney to release her into the custody of adult relatives.

She is not permitted to have contact with any children, including her own, as a condition of her release, said Maricopa County Attorney Office's spokesman Jerry Cobb.

The medical examiner ruled the cause of death to be undetermined, Cobb said.

Her husband said she suffers from severe mental illness. Brad Koistinen told CBS 5 News his wife has been in and out of mental hospitals during their 15-year marriage.

After her arrest, several former members of the Phoenix Laestadian Lutheran Church in Cave Creek came forward with serious concerns about one of its doctrines.

A former member said its strict anti-birth control doctrine might have played a role in Koistinen's mental breakdown.

The member, who wished to remain anonymous out of fear of retribution, said it boils down to brainwashing.
