COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Another meeting for the Richland County Elections Commissioners was held today, but still no official executive director named for the Elections and Voter Registration office.

The commissioners went into executive session following opening remarks for the meeting to discuss personnel and legal matters. The board did not return to a public session for almost two hours. Upon returning, the meeting was adjourned in less than 5 minutes, with no director named.

"There is no action taken on the search for an executive director," said Chairman Allen Dowdy, adding the commissioners will meet again at a later date.

The director position became available after former director Lillian McBride resigned following issues during the November election.

Dowdy explained to the media that the commissioners are "continuing to search diligently" for a new director and made reference to "homework assignments" for board members to complete in the search.

"It's an ongoing process," Dowdy explained, but he did say they are in the "final stage of the process."

Last week, two of the three finalists for the director position withdrew from consideration for personal reasons. The remaining finalist is Howard Jackson, who currently works as Voter Registration and Elections director in Orangeburg County.

Dowdy said the commissioners have not added any other individuals to the finalists' list, after getting about 17 applications from which the three finalists were named.

On May 1, interim executive director Dr. Jasper Salmond told WIS that Jackson, as well as Robert "Adam" Ragan, were interviewed by the commissioners. The third interview was to be given to Patricia Jefferson, but she and Ragan both withdrew from the board's consideration before an interview could happen.

Dowdy confirmed Monday that the commissioners have only interviewed the two candidates.

Unrelated to the search, the board did pass a motion to allow Salmond to make additions to the job descriptions for the deputy director jobs, which are held by McBride and Garry Baum.
