Darton holds off pesky South GA squad to open Region

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Darton State had to battle, but were able to pull out a Region Tournament-opening victory over South Georgia College, 6-4, Wednesday.

Freshman lefty John Harman was on the hill, asked to get the Cavs off on the right foot.

Harman fought back from several hitters' counts to continually get Darton State back in the dugout with no or minimal damage.

In the bottom of the 5th, Ventavis Jerger doubled to lead off the inning.

The next batter, Trey Haygood laid down a bunt to move Jerger to third, but Haygood's quickness caused the throw to first to get away and roll down the right field line.

Jerger jogged around third to tie the game easily.

Two batters later, after a sac bunt advanced Haygood to third, Riliani Familia flied out to deep center, allowing Haygood to tag and score.

Darton State would hold off the pesky SGC squad and advance to face Middle Georgia College at 3:30 Thursday at Cavalier Field.
